LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Workshop: Supporting Students with Mental Health Issues

This workshop (April 28, 2020) was tailor-made for HKU academic staff interested in becoming better equipped to support students in distress and to deal with students with psychological problems and mental health concerns.

About 20 academic staff participated in this interactive (with proper Covid-19 prevention measures!) and informative workshop conducted by 3 HKU clinical psychologists (Director and 2 Counsellors of Counselling and Person Enrichment, CEDARS).

Given the very positive feedback, this bespoke Workshop will be offered again in September, 2020.

Workshop: How to Build your Reputation as a Leader People Want to Work with?

This workshop (October 18, 2019) focused on:

  • What has shaped you as academic leaders
  • Your narrative to motivate the impact you want to make as leaders
  • Techniques to communicate what you stand for as leaders
  • A plan to strengthen your professional narrative.

About 20 Professors and Associate Professors participated actively in this highly interactive workshop.

Workshops on Leadership, Personal and Professional Growth

Continuing our commitment to professional development of academic colleagues, three workshops have been planned throughout this academic year.  Each workshop is paired with a group coaching session.

Workshop 1:  Emotional Intelligence (September 18 & 20, 2017)
Workshop 2:  Productivity and effectiveness (December 4 & 6, 2017)
Workshop 3:  Risk-taking and resilience (March 1, 2018)

The workshops and group coaching sessions will enhance leadership for personal and professional growth and the understanding of leadership within a university context—via experience discussion and activities.

Leadership Workshops: Reaching for the Stars (NOT Just RAE 3* & 4*)

Using principles of neuroscience, positive psychology, corporate experience, and coaching tools, professional coaches facilitated two workshops that help boost confidence and self-belief, research and teaching collaboration and networking, positive impact and international recognition of our professoriate colleagues (June 5 and 8, 2017).

How to Give Honest Feedback to Your PRD Reviewees?

How can we give honest and useful feedback without being judgmental—to help colleagues develop in research, teaching and service?  The half-day Workshop on Giving Honest Feedback was tailored for professoriate colleagues who are PRD reviewers (May 27, 2017).

Conflict Management Workshop

Diversity in opinions can help us see things in new perspectives and think out of the box, but it can also lead to tension. If not managed skillfully, that could escalate unproductively. After the well-received basic workshop for academic leaders (June 1, 2016), we offered a more in-depth workshop on conflict management for interested Heads of departments/divisions (February 16, 2017).

How to Run More Successful Professoriate Searches?

To ensure a competitive and updated approach across Faculties to attract top talents in our recruitment processes, a set of practical guidelines based on international good practices was drawn up. We provide this practical guide for Deans, Heads, search committee members, and all who want to run more successful professoriate searches to recruit academic talent to HKU.

Academic Leadership Basic Workshop for Department Heads

Designed for heads of departments and senior academic staff with significant roles in human resources management in their academic units. With speakers and “sharers” from both within and outside HKU, the one-day workshop on June 1, 2016, covered four major areas: recruiting and promoting excellent academic colleagues, supporting and mentoring academic colleagues, conflict management, and managing non-academic staff.
